Description

This Hopi yellowware open bowl by Nampeyo, circa 1915, is painted with a single abstract avian figure constructed from stepped wing panels, elongated beak elements, and framed rectangular body fields arranged across the interior surface. The composition is anchored by fine-line hatching, narrow parallel bars, and a small spiral device set within the body panel, all hallmark devices of Nampeyo’s early Sikyatki Revival period. The interior field is enclosed by a thin dark rim band, while the exterior is left largely undecorated, showing a warm orange fire-clouded slip typical of outdoor firing methods used at Hano in the early twentieth century.

Overall, the excellent complex design shows Nampeyo’s mature style at her height, around 1910 – 1915.

This bowl measures 3 ½” in height by 9 ½” in diameter and is in excellent original condition.
