Description
This Hopi seed jar by Nampeyo, c. 1920, is painted in the Sikyatki Revival style with a continuous band of feather elements, rectangular cross-hatched panels, and stepped terrace motifs around the shoulder. The design fields are separated by solid framing lines and arranged in alternating positive and negative spaces; a format derived from prehistoric Sikyatki bowls. Broad black triangular feathers project outward from the main band, while the lattice panels and stepped forms anchor the composition. The vessel is finished with a polished yellow slip and shows a natural orange fire blush typical of early 20th-century Hopi outdoor firing practices.
This seed jar measures 3 7/8” high by 7 ¾” in diameter and is in original condition without repairs.
