Description

This polychrome yellowware cornmeal box features a classic Hopi eagle tail motif, Sikyatki designs including the interlocking ‘steps of life,’ avian motifs, a red rim, and fine line work framing the designs. The piece is an excellent example of the utilitarian nature of Hopi ceramics and stunning representation of the Sikyatki Revival design. Cornmeal boxes are ceremonial Pueblo pottery forms used to hold sacred cornmeal employed in prayer, blessing, and ritual observance. Far from utilitarian storage, these vessels preserve the spiritual purity of the meal, which is sprinkled as visual prayer in rites associated with birth, travel, katsina ceremonies, and offerings to the spirit world.

This piece measures 4 ¾” in diameter by 4 ½” high and is in original condition and unsigned.
