Hopi Canteen With Eagle Design by Jean Sahmie

$1,100.00

Description

A masterful example of the enduring Sikyatki Revival art movement, this canteen is the work of Hopi-Tewa master potter Jean Sahmie (1948-2024). This piece is traditionally made of all-natural native Hopi clay, including nice violet shades uncommon in natural Hopi clays. It incorporates design elements introduced to the modern Hopi aesthetic by the artist’s ancestor Nampeyo (1858-1942), the matriarch of modern Pueblo pottery. Jean’s work is known for it’s precise line work and vivid color. She is survived by her sister, the equally talented traditional potter Nyla Sahmie. This piece measures 6” high by 5 3/4” in diameter. It is clearly signed by the artist and in excellent original condition. An excellent piece of ceramic art by a contemporary Native American master at a great price.
