Description

A fascinating black on red open bowl by the Hopi master potter Nampeyo (1858-1942), this piece combines an elegant form with graceful abstracted flower motifs with predominating femininity recalling O’Keefe’s lilies. Nampeyo’s open bowls were often made with a hanging lug like this one, encouraging displaying it vertically to emphasize the painted design. Rivaling the prominent abstract artists of the coming decades, Nampeyo’s work from this period is a significant contribution to American Modern Art. This piece is in excellent original condition without repair or restoration. It measures 9 1/4″ in diameter by 3 3/4″ deep. A significant piece by an important Indigenous Modernist.
