Hopi Black and White on Red Effigy Head Jar by Nampeyo, c.1915-1920

Description

Hopi-Tewa master potter Nampeyo (1856-1942) made this black and white on red effigy head jar in her mature period, about 1915-1920. This is the period where Nampeyo was actively collaborating with the sculptor Emry Kopta (1884-1953), who resided at Hopi. Kopta’s influence shows on this more refined and bust-like variation of Nampeyo’s effigy head jar form (compare to P4630, an earlier example). Like P4630, this jar is also decorated with Nampeyo’s original Sikyatki Revival designs. On this jar, the back of the head is decorated with abstract feathers dropping down from the jar’s rim. The head is nicely detailed, with pierced ears (perhaps the jar originally wore earrings?), expressive facial features, and is even wearing a necklace with a naja. Also note how the facial features on both jars protrude slightly from the form, specifically the eyes, eyebrows, nose, cheeks, and chin. This jar measures 5″ height and 4 1/2″ diameter, and is in excellent, original condition. Complimentary shipping is included.
