Description

This beautiful white-slipped sheep effigy features black geometric patterns and fine line work. Sheep were introduced to the Acoma people by Spanish colonizers in the 17th century. Over time, they became a critical part of Acoma life, particularly through Churro sheep, valued for their wool. Sheep are seen as peaceful, gentle animals, associated with nurturing, protection, and domestic harmony. These effigies tell stories of endurance and adaptation, blending traditional Acoma ceramic techniques with evolving iconography.

This unique piece measures 8” high by 7” in length. It is in excellent condition and is signed by the artist.
