Description

This rare pair of ceramic Wakas kachina figures was created by Nampeyo around 1885. The male is shown on the left with a rattle in his hand while the female is on the right wearing a traditional manta. Hand-formed from native clay and traditionally fired, each figure features horned heads, rounded hollow bodies, and painted details in red and black natural pigments. The figures show variations in form and surface wear, reflecting individual handwork and age. Together they represent Nampeyo’s early, rare figural pottery. Nampeyo made of such “eccentrics” throughout her life time, and this pair is unique.

These pieces measure 5 ½” in height by 3” in diameter.
