Description

This example from Nampeyo’s mature period dates to 1930, and was molded by Nampeyo and painted by her daughter Fannie. The design is a classic example of Nampeyo’s Sikyatki Revival. The collaborative piece between Nampeyo and Fannie features a large, abstract polychrome bird on the interior, using classic Sikyatki designs as well as the mother-daughter pair’s innovations. The bird’s head and beak are centered between its feet with its wings arching down on either side. There are details of feathers and geometric patterns throughout, and the whole design is framed with a black band encircling the interior of the bowl and a small band on the rim of the piece. The exterior of the bowl bares a large avian band encompassing the piece.

This piece measures 4 ¾” in height by 14 ½” in diameter, museum quality, and is in excellent condition. There are two similar bowls, one in Woolaroc, signed by Fannie, and one unsigned in the Museum of Northern Arizona.
