Description
This early masterpiece by Nampeyo (1856-1942) dates to the early 1890s. Although it is repaired, the ceramic is solid, and in original condition. it measures 11″ in diameter by 5 1/2″? in height.
The design is an early example of Nampeyo?s use of prehistoric designs that she used to create the Sikyatki Revival Art Movement. The design is an abstract plant form in one area that is unusually minimized compared to the other early Revival work. There are several other examples of this minimal design from this period, with traditional Polacca or early white slip, although non are as large or as accomplished as this example. The design is clear example of modernist minimal aesthetics.
In this early ceramic, she shows her mastery of the difficult graceful seed jar form. Earlier jars had been bulbous in shape.
