Description

This is a rare Polacca canteen by Nampeyo, c. 1888. This canteen is one of her first creations of the Sikyatki Revival, where she’s using a split design. These early examples of the Sikyatki Revival are transitional, but clearly linked to the traditional designs of Hopi. See a similar design from the same period here: elmoreindianart.com/Detailed/3382.html , which shows consistency in Nampeyo’s early work. You can see that Nampeyo is expanding the ancient designs, and starting to create new abstract designs with them. The canteen is in excellent condition, and measures 8 3/4″ height, 6 1/2″ depth, and 7″ width. From a private Pennsylvania collection.
