Description

Hopi Bowl w/ Sherd Design by Beth Sakeva (1926-1994)

This finely formed Hopi bowl exemplifies Beth Sakeva’s signature “sherd” design style, featuring a dynamic interplay of geometric panels that wrap fluidly around the bowl’s surface. The composition is richly layered with stylized bird elements, migration motifs, and fine linework, all rendered in deep brown and red against a warm, polished slip. A band encircles the upper rim, composed of repeating triangular forms, anchoring the more complex, interwoven design field below.

Beth Sakeva, a Hopi Tewa potter from a prominent lineage that includes her mother Hazel Shupla and relatives Irene Shupla and Lena Charlie, developed a distinctive voice within the tradition after beginning pottery in 1971.

This piece measures 4 ½”in height by 7 ¾” in diameter and is in excellent original condition.
