Early Hopi Yellowware Jar by Nampeyo, c.1900

Description

This early example of Nampeyo working in her yellow slip dates to about the turn of the century. The jar is decorated with a classic Sikyatki Revival design incorporating the triangular and avian fretting, which is seen on pottery from the ancient villages of Jeddito and Sikyatki. The design also has two flying “tassels.” The form is a variation of Nampeyo’s seed jar form, where she has raised the neck and widened the mouth. The jar measures 3 1/2″ height and 5 1/2″ diameter, and is in excellent, original condition.
