Visions Underground, Carlsbad Caverns Through the Artists Eye by Lois Manno

Who was the first artist to enter Carlsbad Caverns in 1924 and paint its wonders by

lantern light? It was Santa Fe’s own Will Shuster, the creator of Zozobra. Many others have dared to follow in his footsteps including our own Steve Elmore. This fascinating book details many artists including Steve and the author Lois Manno and their individual influences on exploration and development of the cave. In Search of Nampeyo Wins First Place in IBPA’s Ben Franklin Awards

We are happy to report that Steve Elmore’s “In Search of Nampeyo” won the gold medal in the IPBA’s Ben Franklin Awards in the Regional category. Steve traveled to Salt Lake City to accept the award where he gave a short talk about the life of Nampeyo to the crowd. We are pleased with this acknowledgment by the publishing industry and excited about an increased enthusiasm about Hopi pottery.

Three Strand Zuni Fetish Necklace with Bench Press Beads, c.1950s

Three Strand Zuni Fetish Necklace with Bench Press Beads, c.1950s

This three strand Zuni fetish necklace dates to the 1950s. The fetishes are all intact and are hand-carved from serpentine, shell, and Catlinite, depicting bears and birds. Traditional old shell heishe is interspersed between the 32 fetishes, and the necklace is finished with bench press beads and silver conical endings, with a hook-and-eye closure. The necklace is strung on silver wire, and measures 27 1/2″ end-to-end. This is a superb example of a vintage Zuni fetish necklace.
